The study of singularities has a long history in algebraic geometry because it is inevitable. In this talk, I will introduce a useful numerical invariant of singularities-the minimal exponent. This invariant was studied using analytic methods in 1980s for isolated singularities and recently studied by Hodge theory. I will highlight the hierarchy of the singularities established by the minimal exponent and some open questions will be discussed.
