In this talk, we study asymptotically locally hyperbolic (ALH) gravitational instantons and their connection to rational surfaces. We explain how to construct complete ALH hyperkähler metrics on the complement of a certain anticanonical elliptic curve in a smooth rational surface. This answers an existence question of Filip and Tosatti, motivated by a conjecture of Haskins, Hein, and Nordström. We then discuss the converse direction: every hyperkähler ALH gravitational instanton admits, for each induced complex structure, a compactification by such a curve in a rational surface.
