Let X be a smooth projective variety over a finite field. The Tate conjecture predicts a formula which allows us to find out how many different classes of line bundles there are on X. The Tate conjecture is deeply related to many other big conjectures in number theory, especially the BSD conjecture. I will talk about some recent progress on the Tate/BSD conjectures. Since this is a job talk, I will also mention some other related results.
