Sean Paul proved that the Mabuchi functional, when restricted to Bergman metrics, can be characterized by two representations of SL(N,C). His introduction of semistability for pairs extends the notion of stability in classical geometric invariant theory. This raises the question of whether a generalized numerical criterion exists for determining the semistability of pairs, akin to the Hilbert-Mumford criterion. We give examples that demonstrate a negative answer to the generalized numerical criterion problem for pairs. Joint work with Sean Paul and Song Sun.
